General: MetaProp Pre-Accelerator at Columbia

What is it?

The MetaProp Pre-Accelerator at Columbia University is an intensive 8-week PropTech incubation program based in New York City. Each spring, up to five very early stage teams/entrepreneurs will be selected from more than one hundred global applications.  Pre-Accelerator participants will receive industry mentoring and access to early product feedback, as well as general business and deep technology trainings from leaders at MetaProp NYC and Columbia University.  Successful program graduates may also receive initial funding from MetaProp Ventures and preferred application consideration for the annual MetaProp NYC growth-stage Accelerator program.

How is the Pre-Accelerator different from the MetaProp NYC 22-week Accelerator program?

The Pre-Accelerator admits earlier stage ideas and earlier stage startups than the 22-week program. There is no guaranteed investment for participation in the Pre-Accelerator program. Since the Pre-Accelerator targets earlier stage ideas and startups, the programming is focused on product formulation rather than growth. There is very little emphasis on public events and PR. The Pre-Accelerator only last for 8-weeks as opposed to the full-length 22-week program. Successful teams will be competitive for the MetaProp NYC 22-week program or other marquee accelerator programs upon graduation.

What is the difference between a Pre-Accelerator, an Accelerator and an Incubator?

  • Incubator

    • Incubators have no set schedule.  They are typically run by government entities, non-profits and/or major corporations. In most cases, startups accepted into incubator programs relocate to a shared office to work with other companies in the incubator on a month-to-month lease program.

  • Pre-Accelerator

    • Pre-Accelerators begin with companies that may be very early in the startup process.  They feature a structured program with a very short timeframe that focuses on big ideas from first-time entrepreneurs, students, recent graduates, and scholars.  Programming tends to focus on mentoring, validation of business idea, a clear understanding of the customer development strategy, market and competitive analysis, a minimum viable product, and communications.

  • Accelerator

    • Accelerator programs usually have a set timeframe in which individual companies spend anywhere from a few weeks to a few months working with a group of mentors and education seesions to build out their business and avoid problems along the way.  Accelerators start with an application process, but the top programs are typically very selective. Companies are given a small seed investment, and access to a large mentor network, in exchange for a small amount of equity. The mentor network, typically composed of startup executives and outside investors, is often the biggest value for prospective companies.

What is Columbia University's involvement?

Columbia University and MetaProp NYC have partnered to create the Pre-Accelerator program. At least half of each program will take place at Columbia University facilities. Selected teams will have access to curated introductions and education sessions in deep technology including: machine learning, artificial intelligence, data management, GIS, technology and product forums and networking opportunities, access to Columbia students, alumni and faculty in real estate, technology and entrepreneurship, MetaProp will provide curated introductions and education sessions on company formation and business law, HR and recruiting, finance and accounting. THIS IS NOT AN ACCREDITED DEGREE PROGRAM FROM COLUMBIA.

Do the startups “graduate” and get a diploma?

This is not a formal college program.  However, each Pre-Accelerator participant will present a private “Graduation Defence” judged by a panel of industry and academic experts. Successful program graduates may also receive initial funding from MetaProp Ventures and preferred application consideration for the annual MetaProp NYC growth-stage Accelerator program.
